Among Strangers Underground: Commuters on the Washington DC Metro
Funny, quirky and curious moments taken from the everyday on his commute to work.
Artist Statement
“Approximately 45 minutes. This is the amount of time the average American takes to get from home to work and back again. Just over a decade ago, I started a new job and became, once again, a commuter. If I was lucky, my roundtrip would take just over 40 minutes.
“When I accepted, I made a promise to myself. I was returning to a “desk job” in downtown Washington, D.C. I had been freelancing for a couple of years. I had discovered street photography before that. Now, things were about to change. My promise was to photograph along my commute. My goal was to capture visual insights into what life is like as a commuter and not simply document details and facts. I found funny, quirky, and curious things as well as a great deal of quiet beauty in some unexpected places.
“Throughout this work, I have approached my fellow commuters as a passenger who happens to be a photographer, rather than as a photographer assigned to be a passenger. Over time, this project has come to focus on people. Even though commuters regularly travel with one another, we remain essentially strangers. What continues to surprise me is how little attention people pay to what is going on around them and how much there is to see.”
