Between documentary, street photography and concept art, the Salaryman Project is on a double mission.
Artist Statement
On one hand, it explores the identity of the average Japanese male office worker, called salaryman, letting mystery and poetry blossom in the supposedly boring corporate world. On the other hand, by concealing the subjects’ identities, the project tries to adapt in a creative way to the increasing constraints of portraits rights on candid street photography. Since 2008, the work comes in the form of an uninterrupted business schedule, giving to the series a narrative and conceptual frame. This sequence allows references to the turn of the seasons, to social events or rituals, and to the very Japanese sense of impermanence
