Young FORMAT
Since the last Format Festival in 2006 QUAD has been working with schools on Format related photography projects. The aim of these projects has been to; raise the awareness of the Format festival with young people and schools, increase the knowledge and skills of young people in the area of photography and raise young people’s awareness of QUAD as a centre for arts and media. These numerous projects are often in partnership with or supported by other organisations or statuary bodies.
Projects have included groups from secondary schools working with a photographer at school and during visits to QUAD. Through these projects pupils have experimented with techniques and equipment, worked on portraiture and street photography, seen photography exhibitions and completed their own photography briefs, mounted their own exhibitions at school and gained an overview of the history of photography.
Most recently QUAD has worked with the Derby Community Safety Partnership Team to devise an intergenerational photography project which is being delivered at a cluster of local primary schools and has involved groups of pupils and adults working together, the project will culminate in a joint exhibition of their work which will coincide with Format 09.
In the run up to Format 09 and while the festival is on, primary schools from across Derby city and South Derbyshire will come and work with artists and photographers at QUAD as part of the Schools Linking Programme. All groups will engage with photography and develop their camera skills whilst creating work. The aim of the day is for pupils to meet their partner class, work in pairs whilst engaging in dialogue. The day’s work will be followed up back at schools where artists will further develop pupils’ camera skills.
