Everybody Street

Introduced by the film’s Director Cheryl Dunn in conversation with photographer Stephen McLaren, FORMAT exhibiting photographer and co-author of Street Photography Now by Thames and Hudson

Everybody Street is a unique documentary featuring some of the most defining New York City street photographers to emerge since Stieglitz in the 1930's. The film offers intimate portraits and candid interviews with a broad range of artists, from hop historians to lower east side documentarians to modern photo masters. Dunn shot the street footage in New York City on a 16-mm. Beaulieu. Everybody Street features: Martha Cooper, Bruce Davidson, Bruce Gilden, Rebecca Lepkoff, Mary Ellen Mark, Jeff Mermelestein, Joel Meyerowitz, Clayton Patterson, Ricky Powell, Jamel Shabazz, Luc Sante, Tim Barber, and Bonnie Yochelson.

 

Cheryl Dunn is a New York based photographer and filmmaker. After travelling Europe in her twenties, she returned to New York to pursue photography, shooting for magazines such as VogueHarpers Bazaar and Dazed and Confused. Stephen McLaren is a London-based freelance photographer and writer showing at FORMAT11 and works regularly for private and public sector clients including the London Mayor’s office, John Lewis, Phillip De Pury, Electronic Arts, the Corporation of London, Visit London and many others. His work has been published in several British newspapers and magazines. He is also the co-author with Sophie Howarth of the Thames and Hudson book, Street Photography Now, which was published in October 2010.www.stephenmclaren.co.uk

In-Sight is a film that gets behind the camera and into the minds of In-Public photographers in action on the street. Filmed in the UK, US, Holland and Australia using innovative miniature camera technology that places you right on the hotshoe, the film reveals the photographers approaches, motivations and techniques. Walk with David Gibson through London's East End, push through the crowds of 5th Avenue with Melanie Einzig or follow Jesse Marlow through the streets of Melbourne.'

Nick Turpin studied Photography, Film and Video at the University of Westminster leaving in 1990 to join the staff of The Independent Newspaper for seven years. He has worked for a decade as a design and advertising photographer in Europe and the States but is best known for his support and promotion of Street Photography. In January 2000 Nick founded the in-public street photographers group which has played a major role in bringing Street Photography to the wide audience it enjoys today. In 2009 Nick started Nick Turpin Publishing in order to provide a printed outlet for Street Photography, he has taught Street Photography at Galleries, Universities and on TV & Radio.
