West Midlands-based photographer and educator Mark Wright joins us for our October event. Wright’s practice is based upon in-depth research, written material and absorbing himself in a landscape or communities. His on-going project The Fireside and the Sanctuary explores the impact of early fracking interventions in the North of England - an aggressive process which involves the drilling into the earth, injecting liquid at high pressures to force open existing fissures to extract oil or gas. Wright looks at the experiences, lifestyles and habitats of the communities affected by fracking decisions. He has spent time interviewing, photographing and living amongst the communities affected and this project captures a significant moment in our history and at its core, a photographic documentation, of the stillness present in our ever-changing world.

The Fireside and the Sanctuary was premiered, with support from GRAIN Projects, at FORMAT Festival 2017.
