FORMAT09 University of Derby Graduate Winners - Sam Hadfield, Emma Linnane, Patrick Davies, Jon Hunt, Martin Holland
The five artists exhibiting were selected by the FORMAT curatorial team from the Photographic Studies Degree Course 2008 at the University of Derby. Their show presents diverse and unique approaches to the theme PHOTOCINEMA . The images explore diverse relationships within the context ranging from the haunting and unsettling to the contemplative, the iconic and the humorous. Sam Hadfield explores artificial environments and their relationship to the spaces they emulate. Emma Linnane takes an eclectic hallucinogenic exploration into the notions of escapism. Patrick Davies presents reinventions of iconic cinematic images, delving into truth and lies and what we find within ourselves through cinematic representation. Martin Holland presents a journey exploring a love/hate relationship with modernity and humanity and the inevitable search for solace, and Jon Hunt pays homage to Film Noir in an exposition of the shadow which has fascinated philosophers and storytellers for thousands of years.
