The transfer of celluloid films onto DVD has dramatically altered how they are viewed. Scenes can be skipped or individual frames frozen to reveal a previously hidden tension between motion and stillness in cinema. Jason Dee emphasizes this perceptual shift by digitally cutting out and freezing fore-grounded actors against shifting backgrounds. The film’s linear trajectory distorts, forced to orbit endlessly around these figures. Neither still image, nor narrative action, these loops seem to take on the qualities of both. They occupy a limbo world between recorded past and viewed present, in a space where cinematic fantasy skirts around photographic document.
