David Lynch returned five years after Mulholland Drive with this surreal meditation on the unnoticed strangeness of Hollywood and film making in general. Reuniting with his Wild At Heart star Laura Dern, Lynch directed this near three hour masterpiece with a renewed sense of vigour granted by the use of handheld digital cameras. A grainy, low res nightmare that never lets you relax and an absolute must see cinema experience.

A man comes out of the desert like something out of the Old Testament, an amnesiac who has been wandering and has now come home. Harry Dean Stanton plays Travis, a man looking for the family he abandoned. A classic of low-fi personal drama, Wenders’ masterpiece gets better year on year. Oh and let’s not forget that wonderful Ry Cooder score, worth the price of admission alone.

In the remote, desolate landscape of the Russian wilderness, two brothers embark on a fishing trip with their father, a man they have only previously known through a single photograph. We witness the story from the boy’s perspective as they watch events unfolding in this Kafkaesque tale. A brilliant debut from the director of The Banishment, this film won the Golden Lion at the 2003 Venice Film Festival.

James Stewart stars as a magazine photographer who is stuck at home with his leg in a plaster cast. Boredom sets in and he begins to spy on his neighbours. As he becomes increasingly obsessed with their activities he witnesses, or thinks he witnesses, a murder. This is one of the classics of 20th century cinema from the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock.

The film that finally gave the Coen Brothers the recognition that they deserve with 7 Academy Award nominations in the year that Titanic swept the board. Frances McDormand won the Best Actress statuette for her marvelously straightforward depiction of a pregnant police officer investigating a murder. Funny, dramatic and filled with wonderful supporting turns from Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare and William H Macy, Fargo hits every note perfectly.

The Train by Donovan Wylie
For several months, Donovan Wylie traveled across Russia with a group of Orthodox priests who were hoping to solidify the faith of believers that might have lapsed during communism, or might have succumbed to Protestant evangelical missionaries. Wylie encounters some extraordinary personalities both on and off the train while creating a portrait of a country and a culture moving in several different directions simultaneously.
