The University of Derby and The Open Studio presents Photographing Paintings / Painting Photographs; an exploration of the ways we define the relationships between ‘painting’ and ‘photography’ in the current artistic climate.

Recent debates have sought to undermine the supposedly clear-cut definitions since the 1970s. With the dawning of the digital age, boundaries have become blurred by new ways of working.

This conference aims to unpick critical theory and practical approaches to Photographing Paintings and Painting Photographs.

Open to students, academics, practitioners and the general public, this conference will feature key speakers presenting perspectives on photography, painting and beyond. Lisa Le Feurve and Jonathan Harris will chair panel discussions with practitioners who work in different fields but draw on an influence of painting and / or photography. The panellists are: Anne Marie Creamer, Andrew Grassie, Angela Grauerholz, Professor John Goto, Dan Hays, Sarah Jones and Edwin Zwakman.

The Open Studio is an advanced research centre in
contemporary fine art practice, with an emphasis on investigations into new forms. Based in the School of Arts, Design & Technology at the University of Derby, staff members include Sarah Jones, John Goto, Mark Durden and Sophy Rickett.
